Portland Bike Route Safety Map

Portland has more than 385 miles of bikeways — the densest per-capita bike network of any large US city — and still the safety of any given ride depends heavily on the specific streets you choose. Brakeaway scores every route across that network from 0 to 100 based on protected infrastructure, neighborhood greenway connectivity, intersection risk, traffic volume, and surface quality. How Brakeaway scores a Portland route

Every route you submit is analyzed across five factors. The factor weights are calibrated to Portland's specific conditions — a dense neighborhood-greenway network on the east side, a handful of bike-priority bridges across the Willamette, genuinely hostile arterials on the High Crash Network, and a meaningful elevation differential between downtown and the West Hills.

  1. Protected infrastructure and greenway connectivity. What share of your route is on a separated multi-use path, a parking-protected lane, a traffic-calmed neighborhood greenway, or a car-free bridge? The Springwater Corridor, the Eastbank Esplanade, Tilikum Crossing, and any continuous greenway segment all score near the top of this factor.
  2. Intersection risk. Portland's east-side grid is cyclist-friendly, but the arterial crossings — Powell, Division, Burnside, Foster, Sandy, 82nd Avenue — are where most serious crashes happen. Brakeaway penalizes arterial-crossing density and flags unprotected crossings of High Crash Network streets.
  3. Traffic volume and speed. Portland's neighborhood greenways are explicitly engineered to stay under 1,000 vehicles per day and under 20 mph. Routes that rely on unprotected bike lanes on streets carrying 10,000+ vehicles per day (MLK, Sandy, 39th) score much lower. The model uses PBOT's published traffic counts where available.
  4. Surface quality and rail hazards. Portland has miles of light-rail track that cyclists have to cross at oblique angles downtown, and pockets of cobblestone and brick in the Pearl District and old Southeast. Brakeaway flags tight track-crossing angles and scores surface quality segment-by-segment.
  5. Elevation and gradient. The climb from downtown up to Council Crest, the West Hills, and to Washington Park is Portland's most consequential gradient factor. Routes that keep you east of the Willamette are essentially flat; routes that cross into Northwest or climb to the hills score lower unless you're on a protected path like Terwilliger Boulevard's bikeway.

Best-scored Portland bike routes

These are the routes that consistently score highest across Brakeaway's five factors. Each one is a good first ride, a good repeat ride, or both.

Springwater Corridor (Sellwood to Boring, 21+ miles)

The flagship Portland rail-trail — paved, fully separated from motor traffic, and connecting the Eastbank Esplanade at OMSI down through Sellwood, Johnson Creek, Gresham, and out to Boring. Routinely scores in the high 90s for its entire paved length. The short on-street detour around the Oaks Bottom section is the only segment that drops below a 95. Good for commuters, long training rides, and first-time Portland cyclists alike.

Eastbank Esplanade + Waterfront Park loop (2.6 miles car-free loop)

The most popular bike loop in the city. Cross any downtown bridge (Steel or Hawthorne is easiest), pick up the path, and ride a fully protected loop using the Steel Bridge's lower pedestrian/bike deck on one end and the Hawthorne Bridge sidewalks on the other. Scores 97–100 on the car-free segments. Tom McCall Waterfront Park's festival season (July–August) brings crowds on summer weekends — use early mornings or weekdays.

Tilikum Crossing + OMSI / South Waterfront connection

Tilikum Crossing is the only major Willamette River bridge closed to private cars — transit, bikes, and pedestrians only — and it scores a clean 100 across the deck itself. Combine it with the South Waterfront greenway and the OMSI waterfront connection for a 4-mile protected route between downtown and the east side that bypasses every high-volume arterial.

N Williams + N Vancouver protected corridor (Broadway Bridge to N Killingsworth)

The pair of parking-protected northbound (Williams) and southbound (Vancouver) lanes forms North Portland's most-used commuter corridor and scores in the high 80s for most of its length. The bike-priority signal treatments at Fremont, Killingsworth, and Alberta keep intersection risk low. Door-zone exposure is the main downside; Brakeaway flags segments where the parking buffer narrows.

SE Clinton Street neighborhood greenway (SE 12th to SE 55th)

The archetypal Portland greenway. Diverters at SE 26th and SE 32nd cut motor-vehicle through-traffic to a trickle, speed bumps enforce a sub-20 mph rhythm, and the crossings of SE 26th, SE 39th, and SE Cesar Chavez all have bike signals or median refuges. Scores in the low-to-mid 90s end-to-end. The extension east of SE 55th picks up the Lincoln-Harrison greenway and gets you all the way to Mt. Tabor.

NE Tillamook + NE Going greenway

Northeast Portland's east–west greenway spine. Tillamook runs from NE 7th out to Fernhill Park with traffic diverters at NE 15th and NE 33rd; Going connects across I-5 via the bike-only overpass and continues through North Portland to the peninsula. Scores in the high 80s to low 90s, with the I-5 overpass consistently near 100. Together they form the best east–west option north of Burnside that avoids Sandy and Broadway.

Terwilliger Boulevard scenic bikeway (Duniway Park to Tryon Creek)

Portland's designated climb route out of downtown toward the southwest. Shared-use path on the east side of Terwilliger for most of its length, with the bike lane continuing past Lewis & Clark College to Tryon Creek State Park. Scores in the low 90s despite the 600-foot climb because the infrastructure is genuinely separated and traffic volumes are low. The canonical "I want to ride to a viewpoint" route from downtown.

Sellwood Bridge + SW Waterfront greenway (south loop)

The Sellwood Bridge reconstruction (completed 2016) added a wide shared-use path separated from motor traffic by a barrier. Combined with the SW Waterfront greenway on the west bank and the Springwater Corridor on the east, it's the highest-scoring river-crossing option south of downtown. Scores 95–100 on the bridge itself and in the 80s on the connecting segments.

Portland quadrants — what to expect

Safety scores vary widely by quadrant. Here's what routes typically score where.

Southeast Portland

The strongest neighborhood-greenway coverage in the city. The SE Clinton, SE Harrison-Lincoln, SE Ankeny, and SE Salmon greenways form a dense low-stress east–west grid from the Willamette out to Mt. Tabor and beyond. North–south greenways (SE 28th, SE 41st, SE 52nd, SE 70th) connect them. The weak points are the arterial crossings — Powell, Division at the east end, and SE 82nd Avenue, which is the city's deadliest street and should be avoided except to cross at signalized intersections.

Northeast Portland

The NE Tillamook–Going spine plus the N Williams–Vancouver corridor give Northeast strong north–south and east–west options. The Alameda neighborhood is nearly all low-stress residential. Weak points: crossing or riding on NE MLK Jr Boulevard, NE Sandy Boulevard, and NE 82nd. Route around them using the greenways wherever possible.

North Portland

Connected but linear. The N Willamette Greenway along Swan Island, N Going, and N Concord all score strongly. The St. Johns Bridge has a narrow shared-path that Brakeaway scores in the low 70s — it's bikeable but tight. The N Vancouver corridor is the default commuter route south. Rose Quarter and the Broadway Bridge approach are traffic-heavy and score lower.

Southwest Portland and downtown

Downtown's grid is mostly bike-lane-painted rather than protected, with the SW Broadway, SW 3rd, and SW Naito protected lanes as the main exceptions. Terwilliger is the best southwest climb. Beyond downtown, SW Portland is topographically challenging and has fewer bike lanes than any other quadrant — Capitol Highway, Barbur, and most of the hills remain low-score corridors. The 2026 Better Naito Forever project should raise scores along the waterfront by extending the protected lane.

Northwest Portland and the Pearl

NW 13th, NW Overton, and the Waterfront Park connection give the Pearl District decent protected options. NW Thurman, NW Savier, and the climb to Forest Park are low-traffic but unprotected — reasonable for experienced riders. NW 23rd, Burnside, and Lovejoy are avoid-by-default on a bike.

Portland's 2030 Bike Plan and the next decade of infrastructure

PBOT's 2030 Bike Plan targets 25% mode share for cycling — the highest goal set by any major US city — and calls for a fully connected low-stress network where 80% of households are within a quarter-mile of a protected bikeway or greenway. For riders, the implication is that the network is still being built out: corridors that score 70 today may score 85 or 90 after a planned upgrade. Brakeaway refreshes infrastructure monthly, so re-scoring an old commute every six months will catch the upgrades.

The current highest-priority 2026 projects include the Better Naito Forever extension (SW Harbor to NW Davis), the 70s Greenway connection through the Hollywood district, the Outer Division safety project, and several greenway-diverter infill projects across inner Southeast.

First-time Portland cyclist — the things nobody tells you

The bridge question. Every Willamette bridge has bike access except I-5 and I-405. In order from best to worst for biking: Tilikum (car-free), Hawthorne (protected sidewalks both sides), Steel (lower ped/bike deck), Sellwood (wide shared path), Morrison (bike lane, moderate traffic), Broadway (bike lane, heavier traffic), Burnside (bike lane, heavy traffic), St. Johns (narrow shared path). For commutes in or out of downtown, default to Tilikum or Hawthorne unless your route makes Steel more direct.

The light-rail track trap. MAX light-rail tracks run through downtown and across the Steel Bridge, Hawthorne Bridge approach, and the Tilikum deck. Cross them as close to perpendicular as you can. Brakeaway flags rail-track segments at oblique crossing angles because a wet rail at 30 degrees is a crash hazard even for experienced cyclists.

BIKETOWN vs your own bike. BIKETOWN is Portland's Lyft-operated bike-share, fully electric (Class 1 pedal-assist, capped below 20 mph). Unlock rate and per-minute pricing make it economical for trips under 30 minutes. For any commute more than three times a week, your own bike usually pays for itself in two months. Brakeaway scores both identically — the motor doesn't change the infrastructure.

The rain reality. Portland's cycling mode share dips from about 7% in summer to 4% in winter, but committed commuters ride year-round. Full fenders (not clip-ons), a breathable rain shell, and reflective accessories are standard. Lights are legally required after dark and are a good idea on any overcast day.
